I am presenting a one-of-a-kind reversible fine-weight silk scarf with intertwining cloths of vivid greens and a variation of stripes inspired by the Suffolk Fields. Drawing inspiration from the places I call home, I wanted to translate my visual attachment within Glasgow and the juxtaposition of Suffolk into a woven fabric. This fine-weight scarf is woven at just over 150 ends per inch, threads within the warp, and each weft thread is carefully placed by hand. Carefully hand-hemmed stitched finished, this scarf elevates outfits with each detail highlighting how it drapes around you.
Handwoven in Glasgow, Scotland, this 100% silk scarf has been carefully designed to ensure your comfort and have minimal impact on our planet. From my previous training with silk mills and silk handweavers, I have found this biodegradable fibre a pleasure in all aspects, from the colours to how the piece moves and drapes around the body This scarf contains a layer of hand-dyed silk, using a water and dye conserving technique, and a layer of silk deadstock, sources from a luxury mill. Sustainability is crucial to my work, so this piece has been created with longevity and dyes where the colour lasts but has minimal impact on the planet; each dye is mixed and dyed specifically for each scarf. The pops of colour are from rescued very fine silk, ensuring these yarns have a new lease of life. Each thread is handled individually to ensure minimal wastage within the weaving process. These two different layers have been developed through samples shown within my process page into a lampas structure, a type of reversible fabric, to highlight the Glasgow cityscape design and allow the colours to be the showstoppers of this timeless heirloom. With careful calculations, this piece highlights the beauty where mathematics, coding and a hint of science meet art and design to create this sustainable piece of art.
To ensure this scarf lasts, handwash in warm water with a drop of soap and steam iron when dry to ensure the glimmer returns ready for your next event.
